New Year’s Greetings!  As we said goodbye to 2007, we reflected on the progress and challenges of our neighborhood, and how we come together in this myriad of diversity to make a difference. Thank you to our neighbors, volunteers and the support of our businesses to make a difference. We have, as usual had both small and big projects, another successful Adams Morgan Day, built new partnerships and helped our neighborhood grow. Our accomplishments for 2007 include:

  • Creation & installation of www.AdamsMorganNOW.com – an interactive online
business directory and portal for Adams Morgan Businesses
  • Launch of the new family-friendly major Spring event – BowWow PowWow at Marie Reed School
  • National Cherry Blossom Festival tree planting at Marie Reed School
  • The 29th Annual Adams Morgan Day Festival with 27,000 attendees
  • 3rd bi-annual Tree Care-taking Event along 18th St and along Columbia Rd. NW
  • Winning an FY 2008 $170,000 DDDOT Transportation Enhancement Grant -to benefit of the neighborhood of Adams Morgan to be spent on improvements to the neglected area behind the Marie Reed Learning Center and Recreation Center, and several adjacent streets.
  • Annual Volunteer Appreciation Party
  • Quarterly Newsletter with its popular HOT LIST and feature on new & old biz, retail, and non-profits
  • Promotions via ads, list servs, banners, wine tastings and articles.

On behalf of  AdamsMorgan Main Street Group, it has been a great pleasure working with many new acquaintances through our volunteers and businesses; some we can already call “Friends.” Special thank you for your support to our Board and Committee members. The Adams Morgan Partnership (BID), the Adams Morgan Business & Professional Association, local non-profit partners and many more.

The Spirit of Goodwill

One of our greatest assets is our volunteers. Without them, our organization cannot accomplish half of what it does. Every year, the Main Street Group honors the spirit of volunteerism for the Adams Morgan neighborhood, projects and businesses. It is that combination of residents and businesses that volunteer which make a difference and allow us to toot our horn, so to speak, about our successes. An annual tradition, our volunteers look forward to sharing more in the spirit at on of our local restaurants.

This year, the Adams Morgan Volunteer Appreciation Party was held at Grand Central on Wednesday, November 14, 2007! The party rocked! Not only did we have a nice turnout of many of our local neighbors and volunteers, Adams Morgan Day Festival Coordinators but also, our businesses were present. We had a tasty spread all donated by our businesses. Everyone commented what a beautiful sampling of flavors of Adams Morgan was available – it was quite amazing.

A Special Shout Out to Matt Bitzer and Ron Bradley, our Volunteers of the Year. Matt is a Johnny-on-the-Spot for us helping us continually at a moment’s notice for our website. Ron is known to just take charge every year of Adams Morgan Day and help us on many of our neighborhood projects wherever, however and whenever. Thank you to Both.

Thank you to Grand Central for hosting the party and to all of our businesses, once again for your continuous contributions.

Cheers to Good Wine & helping the Avalon

In case you didn’t know, in October Chloe graciously donated their venue for our Fall Wine Tasting. As usual, our cozy wine tastings are attended by neighborhood residents, friends and local business owners. We were surprised by our turnout with some new attendees and of course support for our neighbors at the Avalon. Although, our wine tasting is a fundraiser for AMMG, we took the opportunity to invite people to come out and donate for the Avalon. We were able donate $240 to the Avalon which will hopefully, go to someone’s one month Co-op fee! Door prizes were graciously donated by Hoopla DC and Yazuzu.

If you would like to help Avalon residents, please go to avalonbenefit.com for more information.

Fabulous WINE TASTING on October 10

Tuesday, October 10th promptly at 7pm, people were already eagerly entering the doors of El Tamarindo to sample a variety of specialty wines from De Vinos. This continued AdamsMorgan MainStreet’s non-profit wine tastings on the 2nd Tuesday every other month.

Javier Reyes, owner of El Tamarindo spoke about his restaurant and the delicious food provided. A combination of neighbors and friends from other areas sampled El Tamarindo’s tasty grilled chicken and steak tidbits, 2 types of quesadillas, vegetable and cheese, and also cheese and fruit.

Jorge Aguilar, owner of De Vinos, arranged a spectacular wine tasting, with approximately 12 – 16 wines and 4 different distributors/ sommeliers to speak about each wine. A printed list of all wines was provided for guests to make notes, and there were even a few seasonal beers to taste. The Pumpkin Ale was definitely a hit! In addition, De Vinos offered special discounts for any orders placed that evening, and that 5% of any orders placed there would be donated to Adams Morgan Main Street.

Adams Morgan MainStreet always promotes our retail establishments through door prizes. New salon arrival, Urban Escape and long-time neighborhood flagship, Fleet Feet, donated the retail prizes. Local resident Katie Plumb won the $50 gift certificate to Fleet Feet. Nataliya Andreyeva, a local artist who exhibited at the Adams Morgan Day Festival, won the other door prize, a $50 gift certificate to Urban Escape. Approximately 50 people attended and raved about the wines and atmosphere of the event. “Then and Now” Adams Morgan, a pictorial history was available for viewing and purchase.

Check back to the website for details coming soon for the next Wine Tasting on December 12th.
