Transportation Committee

The Transportation Committee works on accessibility issues, large and small. Any one item is considered in an overall, comprehensive context of improving the mobility and accessibility of the business district, such as traffic management (taxi-stands, valet coordination, shuttles, parking and traffic flow), walkability & pedestrian safety, and alley trash pick-up consolidation.

Transportation Workshop
The Transportation Committee produced the first ever comprehensive look at the Adams Morgan business area mobility and accessibility issues with a major Transportation Charrette (a transportation planning public process), in 2004. The catalyst for Main Street’s action was the dissatisfaction of businesses and residents with first DDOT proposals for reworking the 18 th ST & Columbia Rd intersection, and to dramatize the point that intersections should not be looked at in isolation, but in an overall grid and traffic flow context for vehicles, buses, and pedestrians.

Bringing together for the first time significant numbers of business, residents, and city officials to consider and discuss problems and possibilities, moderated by a nationally known expert, Dan Burden. Click here to see Transportation Workshop details.

This stimulated DDOT to engage in a more comprehensive approach and resulted in the 18 th Street Transportation study. Click here to see Main Street’s Comprehensive Transportation recommendation.
